The Art of Mentoring
A weekend workshop in Paoli, Indiana
June 20-22nd, 2008
~What kinds of sustainable community and mentoring practices can we learn from indigenous
cultures?

~How do we become leaders and stewards of the world we are passing on to future generations?

~A culture of isolation and consumption has led to fractured families, communities, climate and
economy.  What kinds of cultural redesign tools do we need to recreate a life that works for
ourselves and our families?

~How do we challenge teenagers in a supportive way while strengthening them to face the
unknowns of life?

~How do we model and mentor sustainable behaviors for the children?
Instructors: Mark Morey with assistance from Kevin Glenn, Monique Philpot, and Jai Yeck
About Mark Morey: Mark is a creative artist, visionary educator, cultural engineer, and consultant who designs
regenerative holistic communities with timeless native principles. He founded three transformational organizations in the
last 12 years:
Deep Wilds, Vermont Wilderness School, and the Institute for Natural Learning, sparking a nature community
awareness movement in the Northeast impacting 5,000 adults and children today. He has facilitated or co-facilitated
wilderness survival and spiritual passages for teens and adults since 1997. He visits and consults with the Regenerative
Design Institute in California regularly. Mark feels inspired by the hero's journey model and the oral history of his ancestors

available to participants.  There will not be strenuous hiking and the area we will be in mostly is pretty flat. For those who
want to explore more there are 200 acres of forests, creeks, hills, and meadows.
"It takes a village to raise a child"
"It is the student that holds the answer and the teacher the question"
"We do not need to invent sustainable human communities. We can learn
from societies that have lived sustainably for centuries. We can also
model communities after nature's ecosystems... Since the outstanding
characteristic of the biosphere is its inherent ability to sustain life, a
sustainable human community must be designed in such a manner that its
technologies and social institutions honor, support, and cooperate with
nature's inherent ability to sustain life."

We will address these questions and more as we welcome special guest, visionary, and cultural engineer
Mark Morey, who is arriving from Vermont. Discovering ways of reclaiming community, connection to nature,
and healthy social structures are crucial as we enter into an age of drastic changes in our climate, economy,
and energy systems. This summer attend the "Art of Mentoring" and experience an effective "cultural
mentoring" approach geared towards connecting people to nature.  We will explore the unique 8-Shields
Mentoring Model and spend time discussing Peacemaking traditions and the 36 Cultural Points common to all
indigenous peoples. The weekend will include lectures, small-group activities, stories, and discussions.
In this community-building workshop participants will gain real life-skills and learn the path towards
transformation and reclaiming who we are, what we truly want in life, and how to get there. Experience
first-hand an effective mentoring culture, a healthy model of community, and a hopeful vision for the future
while gaining the tools to create this in your life, family, or organization.
This will all be woven together throughout the weekend at the Lazy Black Bear which sits on 200 acres with
forests, hills, ponds, and streams that are full of plants and wildlife.
