Why nature connection? What is the importance of nature awareness in the life of a
human being?
Nature awareness is about using all of our senses to perceive the world around us. It is
about being present, paying attention, and noticing the subtleties of our surroundings. A
good mentor has many ways of drawing out this kind of awareness. Our observations and
experience mentoring kids and adults in nature connection (a.k.a. natural mentoring) has
lead us to some fascinating findings.
Kids and adults who are in a nature awareness mentoring
program tend to foster certain healthy traits. Some of these
attributes that we see emerge in people are things like vitality,
laughter and happiness, a sense of peace, confidence,
helpful attitude, purpose beyond self, and a habit of stewardship
for our natural environment and the people around us. These
are the effects of connecting to wild nature in a real and
meaningful way. ("wild nature" as opposed to "domestic nature"
such as yards, farms, greenhouses, and parks)
Natural mentoring also stimulates an organic and holistic
way of developing cognitive abilities, critical thinking, storytelling
and communication, observation, and recognizing patterns (in
nature, animals, weather, people, and situations). Is it really a
surprise to think that nature connection can deliver so much? If
we think about it, our ancestors lived outside all the time and
thus our brains and bodies evolved within the natural environment.
Mentoring is not only about nature connection but it is about
the individual, the child who carries certain interests, curiosity, and passions. A good mentor
is an observer who facilitates experiences or discussions that draw out a child's true nature
and what they are here to accomplish in life. It just so happens that nature (life) is a teacher
that will challenge us, mentor us, reflect who we are, and stretch our senses and awareness
if... we are called to pay attention; which is the role of the mentor.
