Tracking and Nature Awareness Intensive Beginning September 2009
|
"Tracking is like dancing because your body
is happy"
This program is open to past WILD participants or new students with an interest in the ancient art
of tracking. Participant's will learn clear print identification, how to interpret patterns of tracks, track
journaling and collecting valuable data from tracks, determining when tracks were left, tracking in
various substrate conditions where clear prints may not be found, enhancing the 5 physical senses,
patterning our brain to pay attention to our surroundings, putting together a story from the
evidence, and so much more! (See the list below for more details)
Our approach combines ancient native wisdom and techniques with modern field sciences,
research, journaling, and presentation of the facts. Tracking is about seeing what is really
happening without judgement and interpreting purely and clearly so that the story may be
accurately told. It is a holistic approach to developing cognitive skills, problem solving, being
present, and storytelling. Thus, it has relevant and practical applications in everyday life. It begins
with the footprint of an animal which eventually leads the tracker to everything else in the universe.
Therefore, tracking is not just about animals and footprints, but a tracker must be knowledgeable
about everything in nature including plants, trees, birds, insects, and weather patterns.
Curriculum:
- Clear Print Identification
- Interpretation of track patterns (to determine mood,
causes and effects, speed of travel, etc)
- Journaling: learning what information is relevant and
how to gather data
- Mapping: learning to read maps and to sketch your
own along with other navigation skills
- Enhancing the 5 physical senses and patterning your
brain to pay attention to your surroundings (rather
than being lost in thought and not noticing anything)
- Storytelling (a tracker must be able to retell the story
so that the community can benefit)
- Observation: of animals and people, seeing into
behavior and patterns
- The Art of Questioning: which is essential not only for
trackers but parents, teachers, counselors, and
therapists
- Human Tracking: footprints, vehicle tracks, discarded
items
- Sign Tracking: anything other than a footprint that
indicates the presence and behavior of an animal (i.
e. trails, dens, scat, beds)
- Weather Journaling
- Determining the Age of a Track
- Pressure Releases: determining speed, head turns,
and other body movements within a single track
- Camouflage & Movement: animal forms and stealth
- Bird Language and Concentric Rings: reading the
forest alarm network to determine what is happening
beyond what your eyes can see
- Projects, Assignments, and Short Readings to
complete in-between classes (some on your own and
some with a partner or group)
- This list could go on!
Details:
- Meets 3 times per month
- Cost $65 per month
- Instructor: Kevin Glenn
Important Note:
This class is for people looking for a
higher level of focus than the W.I.L.D.
level 2 class option. You must complete
all assignments including out of class
homework to stay in the program.
Overall it will take a higher degree of
commitment from you than the W.I.L.D.
program. Because of this, it is not for
everyone!
A tracker is in communication with the
earth and thus an interpreter of the
earth
